CLArtVision: The sound of Frédéric Chopin’s music

For CLArtVision the pianist Elzbieta Dedek will play Frédéric Chopin’s „Fantaisie Impromptu“ in her salon. She will perform on a piano that was formally owned by Henri Herz, a friend of Frédéric Chopin. So the compositions will sound exactly the same way as Frédéric Chopin heard them. Afterwards Elzbieta Dedek will play on a Steinway & Sons piano from 1986. The pitch of pianos has changed during the last two centuries, contemporary pianos are one tone higher. Correspondingly the compositions sound differently today.

Le son de la musique de Frédéric Chopin – Le pianiste Elzbieta Dedek joue dans son salon : « Fantaisie Impromptu » de Frédéric Chopin. Elle joue sur un piano de Henri Herz, ami de Frédéric Chopin. Le son de ce piano est le son  de l’époque. Ensuite  Elzbieta Dedek joue la même composition sur un piano Steinway & Sons de 1986. Le ton n’est pas le même, car au cours des deux derniers siècles la tonalité a changé. Ce n’est pas un détail. Elzbieta nous explique.

Der Klang der Musik von Frédéric Chopin – Die Pianistin Elzbieta Dedek spielt für CLArtVision in ihrem Salon „Fantaisie Impromptu“ von Frédéric Chopin. Sie spielt auf einem Klavier von Henri Herz, der ein Freund von Frédéric Chopin war. Frédéric Chopin hat seine Kompositionen damals genauso gehört wie sie auf diesem Klavier heute erklingen. Anschließend spielt Elzbieta Dedek auf einem Klavier von Steinway & Sons aus dem Jahr 1986. Im Laufe der letzten beiden Jahrhunderte veränderte sich die Tonlage der Klaviere; die heutigen Klaviere klingen einen Ton höher. Die Kompositionen hören sich heute dementsprechend alle anders an.
